One of the greatest tragedies in this world is the loss of innumerable opportunities for the most precious and lasting treasure in life - people and relationships- because we rarely LISTEN TO OTHERS.
Our personality helps us form relationships. That is the easy part. The hard part is to maintain. It requires having to understand the other person, his/her feelings, thoughts and actions.
When we feel understood,we trust the person. We trust them, not only with our secrets and private information, but also with our feelings.
Most of the time, focusing on our own expectations, we try to persuade another to do what we want. This we start doing, once the relationship deepens. And that is the beginning of the end. This leads to frustration and bitterness in relationship.
Instead, we must try to understand what the other person wants, and then try to help them achieve it. The depth of any relationship depends upon how special, valued, cherished and happy we feel in it. When we focus on how much we are contributing, rather than how much we are gaining, it will open our eyes and ears to the needs of the other.
Establishing trust is about listening and understand - not necessarily agreeing or even approving. That is, we have to listen without making judgements about the other person's personality.
Accept the person as they are. With all his/her positives AND NEGETIVES.
